This fact sheet provides ideas for improving the energy efficiency of fireplaces, which are "relatively inefficient devices for heating the home." Some of the suggestions include keeping the damper closed when the fireplace is not in use, using glass or metal doors or heat shields, installing a fireplace insert, and installing a wood stove in front of the fireplace.
