"The Rock" served as a military prison and a federal penitentiary between 1859 and 1963. The site lists escapes between 1862 and 1962 (most were recaptured) with related news articles, and a diagram of the prison marking escape points. The Gallery has photos of some prisoners with their prison numbers, crimes, and sentences, and the details of their escapes and recaptures (includes the 1962 escape that Clint Eastwood's movie Escape from Alcatraz was based on).
