The "Mosquito Fleet" in the Puget Sound area of Washington state "consisted of individually owned and operated vessels of varying size that would keep a somewhat regular [ferry] service between the various waterfront communities." This site provides a brief history of the Mosquito Fleet and of the development of the MFT, "a 57-mile roadside hike and bike route along the shores of the Kitsap Peninsula" that will connect historic Mosquito Fleet docks. In 1947, Howard Hughes flew his HK-1 for over a mile; and it never flew again. Housed for years in Long Beach, California, the "largest aircraft ever built" is now living in McMinnville, Oregon.
