This online exhibit from the National Library of Medicine explores the relationship between faith and healing as expressed in personal devotional paintings from Italy and Mexico. Ex-votos are small paintings usually done on tin or canvas as an expression of gratitude to a saint who has interceded on behalf of a person who is ill.
