American Horticultural Society Heat Zone Map view detail comment email this

"The 12 zones of the map indicate the average number of days each year that a given region experiences 'heat days'--temperatures over 86 degrees (30 degrees Celsius)." The site has a Zip Code Zone Finder (1997 data) so users can determine their garden's heat zone and choose plants accordingly. The heat zones complement the well-known system of USDA Hardiness Zones, which measure winter cold in a similar fashion.

Includes maps on many agricultural themes, statistics by congressional district, and a database of crops and livestock. The census is conducted in years ending in 2 and 7; the site provides the current and the two previous reports. Searchable. From the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map view detail comment email this

This interactive document from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows 10 different minimum temperature zones in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, "each of which represents an area of winter hardiness for the plants of agriculture and our natural landscape. It also introduces zone 11 to represent areas ... that are ... essentially frost free." Also includes information about the creation of the map, and indicator plant examples for selected woody plants.

A collection of over 3,000 digitized photographs of natural vegetation in California, taken during the 1920s and 1930s as part of a U.S. National Forest Service survey. Many of the photographs feature links to corresponding historical topographical maps from the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Biogeographic areas are divided into biomes and further divided into hundreds of ecoregions. Each ecoregion provides a photo, description, size, location, and conservation status. Other features are a glossary and the article from the November 2001 issue of BioScience describing this project, the effort of more than a thousand biogeographers, taxonomists, conservations, and ecologists.
