Websites presented in alphabetical order Earth and Moon Viewer View either a map of the Earth showing the day and night regions at this moment or view the Earth from the Sun, the Moon, the night side of the Earth, above any location on the planet specified by latitude, longitude, and altitude, from a satellite in Earth orbit, or above cities around the globe. Also shows the Moon from Sun, Earth, night side, above formations on the Moon, and as a map. http://www.fourmilab.ch/earthview/ Topics: Astronomy, Maps by Place, Photograph Collections, Scientific Themes Last updated Jan 11, 2007 Satellite Tracking: Live 2D Java Tracking Maps Keep track of a variety of satellites: spacecraft, weather, amateur (HAM) radio, and search and rescue. Find the latitude, longitude, and altitude for the various objects. Type in your zipcode to discover when a satellite will pass overhead. Set up an object's location and direction to calculate where the object will be in the future. The project is "a 5-year survey of the Northern sky (10,000 square degrees) to about 1/2 arcsecond resolution using a modern ground-based telescope [SDSS]. It will characterize about 200M objects in 5 optical bands, and will measure the spectra of a million objects." The site has science projects and links to other education sites, information on astronomy, a FAQ, and a glossary. http://skyserver.sdss.org/dr1/en/ Topics: Astronomy, Maps by Place, Scientific Themes Last updated Oct 4, 2004 Your Sky An interactive planetarium. By entering a city, or the latitude and longitude, maps can be produced for "any time and date, viewpoint, and observing location." Maps can also be customized including viewpoint, magnitude, and other display options. Skies may also be viewed from the horizon. An "ephemeris for the sun, moon, planets, and any tracked asteroid or comet" is included for each map. Orbital elements of asteroids or comets can also be plotted. http://www.fourmilab.ch/yoursky/ Topics: Astronomy, Maps by Place, Scientific Themes Last updated Oct 4, 2004 |
