This 2008 feature uses historical and retrospective articles to recall the events starting on February 12, 1968, in which 1,300 sanitation workers (almost all African American) in Memphis, Tennessee, went on strike. During the strike, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. traveled to Memphis to support the striking workers, where he was assassinated, on April 4, 1968. Small collection of photos from an October 16, 1995, event in which "African-American men from across the country gathered on Washington's National Mall ... for a massive Million Man March advocating 'unity, atonement and brotherhood.'... Organized by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, the march also drew participants from other churches, as well as many schools and social organizations." Part of a Smithsonian Institution program to document events on the National Mall.

Through Open Eyes: 95 Years of Roslyn's Black Mining History view detail comment email this

In 1888, the coal mines of Roslyn, Washington state, were shut down when the Knights of Labor went on strike. Refusing to meet the strikers' demands, the mine owners recruited black miners from the South. Between 1888 and 1889 over 300 black miners and their families arrived in Washington state. This exhibit, which includes a searchable photo database, tells the story of the recruits and the community they created in the foothills of the Cascades.
