Temperature
Websites presented in alphabetical order About Temperature An overview of temperature, including information on thermometers, heat, thermodynamics, kinetic theory, and radiation temperature. Includes related links. Also available in Spanish. http://eo.ucar.edu/skymath/tmp2.html Topics: Geography, Weather Last updated Jul 3, 2005 American Horticultural Society Heat Zone Map "The 12 zones of the map indicate the average number of days each year that a given region experiences 'heat days'--temperatures over 86 degrees (30 degrees Celsius)." The site has a Zip Code Zone Finder (1997 data) so users can determine their garden's heat zone and choose plants accordingly. The heat zones complement the well-known system of USDA Hardiness Zones, which measure winter cold in a similar fashion. http://www.ahs.org/publications/heat_zone_map.htm Topics: Plants, Scientific Themes, Weather Last updated Aug 28, 2004 Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) This tutorial explains what Bose-Einstein condensation is (at incredibly low temperatures, atoms "lose their individual identities and coalesce into a single blob"), how it is formed, and why it might be important in the future. Includes information about laser cooling and the creation of "optical molasses," the processes of magnetic trapping and evaporative cooling, and the characteristics of the condensate. Includes animations. From the Physics Department at the University of Colorado at Boulder. http://www.colorado.edu/physics/2000/bec/ Topics: Science, Science, Weather Last updated Feb 11, 2004 Contrails Brief introduction to "the condensation trail left behind jet aircrafts ... called contrails. Contrails form when hot humid air from jet exhaust mixes with environmental air of low vapor pressure and low temperature." Includes a brief discussion of how contrails "reduce the terrestrial energy losses of the planet, resulting in a warming." From a professor of atmospheric and ocean sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/wxwise/class/contrail.html Topics: Transportation, Weather Last updated Jun 27, 2006 Earth Observatory This site provides "new satellite imagery and scientific information about our home planet. The focus is on Earth's climate and environmental change." Articles under Features are about the atmosphere, oceans, land, life on earth, heat and energy, and remote sensing. Other sections present current stories, reference materials, earth observing missions, experiments for learning about remote sensing, and a glossary. Weekly updates available. http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/ Topics: Astronomy, Environment, Pollution, Science, Weather Last updated May 7, 2002 Heat Island Effect This site addresses the concept of heat island effect, which "describes urban and suburban temperatures that are 2 to 10°F (1 to 6°C) hotter than nearby rural areas." Discusses impacts (including air pollution, air conditioning costs, and heat-related illnesses), ideas for reducing temperatures and energy use (such as green roofs and cool paving materials, and shade trees), and related research projects. Includes a FAQ and glossary. From the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). http://www.epa.gov/heatislands/ Topics: Energy, Pollution, Weather Last updated May 30, 2006 Infrared Zoo This online gallery from the California Institute of Technology features thermal infrared photographs of dozens of animals including birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, and insects and arachnids. Also includes an illustrated essay on the differences between warm-blooded and cold-blooded animals, and an infrared hide-and-seek game. http://coolcosmos.ipac.caltech.edu/image_galleries/ir_zoo/ Topics: Photograph Collections: Nature & Wildlife, Photography, Technology, Weather Last updated Mar 20, 2004 Oceanweather: Current Marine Data "These pages show current marine data from ... models and observational data worldwide. This service is provided for the enjoyment of the marine/meteorological community and is not intended for commercial purposes." Browse data by region. Each region includes visual representations of wave height, marine observations, and sea surface temperatures. From Oceanweather, Inc., a coastal and ocean engineering consulting firm. http://www.oceanweather.com/data/ Topics: Geology, Weather Last updated Dec 30, 2003 Temperature Conversion Calculator Convert from and to Fahrenheit, Celsius, Kelvin, Reaumur, and Rankine. http://chemistry.berkeley.edu/links/temperature.php Topics: Mathematics, Ready Reference & Quick Facts, Weather Last updated Sep 22, 2009 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map This interactive document from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows 10 different minimum temperature zones in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, "each of which represents an area of winter hardiness for the plants of agriculture and our natural landscape. It also introduces zone 11 to represent areas ... that are ... essentially frost free." Also includes information about the creation of the map, and indicator plant examples for selected woody plants. http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/ Topics: Agriculture, Maps by Place, Plants, Scientific Themes, U.S. Maps, Weather Last updated Oct 14, 2004 World Climate Climate data are historical weather averages, showing what the weather was typically like each month, averaged over varying ranges of years. As far as we can tell, the latest dates are in the 1990s. Designed for those interested in the general historical weather patterns, at home, and around the world. About 85,000 climate records are online for tens of thousands of places. These include average temperatures (various measures), rainfall, and pressure. http://www.worldclimate.com/ Topics: Weather Last updated Oct 9, 2007 |
