String Theories
Websites presented in alphabetical order Cambridge Relativity Information written for the layperson about cosmology, black holes, cosmic strings, inflation, and quantum gravity. There are many photos and a few animations. Additionally, there is a tour of the National Cosmology Supercomputer of the United Kingdom. From the University of Cambridge. http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/gr/public/ Topics: Astronomy, Photograph Collections, Photograph Collections: Regional, Physics Last updated Mar 7, 2004 The Elegant Universe Companion site to the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) NOVA program about string theory (the idea "that the fundamental ingredients of nature are inconceivably tiny strings of energy, whose different modes of vibration underlie everything that happens in the universe") as explained by author-physicist Brian Greene. Includes interviews and articles, information about the film's special effects, interactive features on multidimensional math and supersymmetry, a teacher's guide, and related resources. Note: Contains some dead links. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/ Topics: Energy, Film, Movies, & Video, Physics, Science, Technology Last updated Jan 4, 2009 Max-Planck-Institut für Gravitationsphysik/Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics Also known as the Albert Einstein Institute, this German institute studies gravitational physics, "from Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity to quantum gravity and string theory." The site contains publications, information about the institute's research, and related links. Some material in German, but most information available in English. http://www.aei.mpg.de/english/ Topics: Education, Physics Last updated Apr 30, 2005 Official String Theory A well-done explanation of a complex theory in particle physics. Includes the basics of string theory, experiments testing string theory predictions, string theory and cosmology, and a timeline of string theory development. The String Theater presents a RealAudio colloquium by Professor John Schwarz. There are also Real Audio interviews with people involved in the research, a discussion forum, and related links. http://superstringtheory.com/ Topics: Physics Last updated Mar 13, 2000 Stephen Hawking’s Universe Based on the PBS program, this site explains cosmological concepts in simple language. Covers black holes, the big bang, antimatter, super strings, dark matter, people who have made significant contributions in cosmology, discussions about theories of the universe, and ideas that are still problematic to many scientists. Includes links to related websites and a list of books. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/hawking/html/home.html Topics: Astronomy, Physics Last updated Apr 26, 2009 |
