From the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), the Email Preference Service (eMPS) lets consumers register addresses that they would like to be kept out of spam lists. DMA members will be required to use the list, and nonmembers will also be able to use the service. The registration expires after five years.

This April 2008 feature surveys the history of Internet spam starting 30 years ago when "a marketer at the now-defunct computer firm Digital Equipment Corporation, sent an email to 393 users of Arpanet, the US government-run computer network that eventually became the internet. "A 'captcha' is a program that can tell whether its user is a human or a computer [such as those with distorted images of letters]." You can use this site to help stop receiving email spam "by asking people to solve a recaptcha before they can view your email address" (if you are running a web application that lists user's email addresses).
