Description of a learning activity for kindergartners and first graders in which emerging readers "practice their reading skills using a variety of environmental print materials. Students review familiar logos and images as a class, and then use the logos and images to create their own Bingo cards." Part of the Read, Write, Think website, a partnership between the International Reading Association (IRA), the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and the Verizon Foundation.

This "is a nationwide campaign to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read. May is Get Caught Reading month, but the campaign is promoted throughout the year." The site provides information about this literacy program, which features posters with celebrity supporters (such as NBA player Grant Hill and First Lady Laura Bush). Includes a fact sheet on the importance of reading to children. Sponsored by the Association of American Publishers.

National Reading Panel (NRP) view detail comment email this

This panel was convened by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) in 1997 "to assess the effectiveness of different approaches used to teach children to read." In 2000, the NRP concluded its work and submitted "The Report of the National Reading Panel: Teaching Children to Read." This site features a summary and the full report, which discusses topics such as phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and teacher education.

An creative pen pal project for grade schoolers, who make a two-dimensional character and start a journal for him. Then he and the journal "are sent to another school where students there treat Flat Stanley as a guest and complete the journal. Flat Stanley and the journal are then returned to the original sender." The site includes a list of participants and resources for students and teachers. Based on a children's book by Jeff Brown.
