Writer Ella Rhoads Higginson grew up in Oregon and moved to Bellingham, Washington state, after marrying Russell C. Higginson. Her writing included novels, poems, and short stories. She became Washington's poet laureate in 1931. Robert Pinsky, former Poet Laureate of the United States, created this audiovisual poem project to reflect America's diversity. Brief videos, the heart of the site, show Americans describing and reciting a personally meaningful poem. Other features include poem texts, teaching suggestions, and an invitation to submit a favorite poem.
