ING, "a collaborative project of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) and the Smithsonian Institution, was initiated in 1954 as a compilation of generic names published for all organisms covered by the 'International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.'" Database is current through 1990 and includes a bibliography. From the Smithsonian Institution, Department of Botany.

"A database of the [scientific] names and associated basic bibliographical details of all seed plants" (flowering plants and gymnosperms). Searchable by plant name, author, or publication. The data are compiled from the Index Kewensis (IK) from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; the Gray Card Index (GCI) for New World plants at Harvard's University Herbaria; and the Australian Plant Names Index (APNI).

It also contains a glossary of meanings to aid users in finding a flower or plant to go with a specific thought or idea (e.g., Damask Rose represents "bashful love"). The information is taken from six books printed between 1853 and 1899.

This site from the United States Department of Agriculture provides standardized plant names, symbols and other plant attribute information. PND can be searched by common or scientific name, family or genus and limited by state. In addition, there is a browsable and searchable image gallery of over 1,000 plants; Fact Sheets and Plant Guides , which provide more detailed information on over 130 species of plants; lists of invasive and noxious weeds and threatened and endangered plants; and wetland indicator status for vascular plants, by genus, family, and/or wetland region.
