Emphasis is on prehistory to the Muslim conquest of the seventh century CE. (Note: When we evaluated this site, it wasn't working in Internet Explorer.)

Brief introduction to this Middle Eastern nomadic group. "A Bedouin is one who was born and raised in the desert or mountain wilderness and lives alongside nature in black tents or in caves." They raise goats, sheep, donkeys, horses and camels. The site describes Bedouin camels, Arabian horses as raised by Bedouins, wedding traditions, foods, traditional costumes, and tents. This online exhibit from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art explores "courtly art and culture in western Asia, 1256-1353," by examining "the important artistic and cultural achievements that occurred in the Iranian world in the aftermath of the Mongol invasions." It features information and images about the Mongols in China and in Iran, the Mongols and Islam, manuscript illustration, and textile art. Includes a resource guide for teachers.

"The G. Eric and Edith Matson Negatives are a rich source of historical images of the Middle East — notably Palestine, present day Israel, and the West Bank — from 1898 to 1946. The collection contains 20,000 glass and film photographic negatives," of which about 7,500 are available online. Searchable and browsable. Includes a bibliography and links to related collections.
