This online exhibit examines this slave trade and "seeks to increase understanding of this maritime epic and its legacies in the modern world." The site has a general history of the ship, built in the time of King Henry VIII, and a visual story of its sinking in 1545 and its excavation over 400 years later. It encompasses American decorative arts; Asian, Oceanic, and African arts and culture; Asian export art; early American architecture;maritime art and history (including scrimshaw and folk art, a section on signal flags systems, and ship riggings); Native American art and archaeology; and natural history. In the large shiphall stands the warship Vasa — the only remaining, intact 17th century ship in the world." Features a history of the ship, which sank shortly after it began its maiden voyage in 1628 and lay on the harbor floor until salvaged in 1961, and descriptions of the museum's exhibits.
