It generally does not cover animation techniques used to create special effects in live action cinema or television." What's up, Doc? This nice official site, which includes tributes to his lifetime of cartoon work and a biography. An excellent first stop for information about Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Henery Hawk, Porky Pig, Sniffles, Tweety Bird, Wile E. Coyote, and many other characters Jones created or helped create. (In the section called Characters , the links for "Next Page" are hard to see.)

This browsable encyclopedia of "toons" includes listings for hundreds of cartoons (animated and print media) and cartoon characters. Each entry includes the original medium (theater animation for Mickey Mouse), the publisher or distributor, and the date the character first appeared. Site also includes sections for newspaper and Web comics, cartoon producers, and "Today in Toons." ToonSearch, found at the bottom of encyclopedia entries, does not work.

The American Memory Project has released 21 short, animated films, and 2 fragments from 1900-1921 (available in RealMedia, MPEG, and QuickTime formats). The bibliographic records are browsable by title, subject, or date as well as searchable by keyword. "The films include clay, puppet, and cut-out animation, as well as pen drawings." Be sure to read the Notes on the Origins of American Animation . The essay explains the history of each film in the collection, plus a general history of early animation. While they are entertaining and amusing, remember that "...these films also reveal the social attitudes of early twentieth-century America." From the Library of Congress.
