Offers an online calculator that allows users to enter their starting city, destination, and vehicle information (for newer car models) to determine fuel cost, miles, and gallons used. This June 2008 article and accompanying radio program discusses how Detroit's Big Three automakers (Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors) have not anticipated the need for more fuel efficient cars as well as Japanese car companies have. The article notes that "American manufacturers are making more fuel-efficient cars overseas than they are selling here." "First enacted by Congress in 1975 [following the oil embargo], the purpose of CAFE is to reduce energy consumption by increasing the fuel economy of cars and light trucks. Regulating CAFE is the responsibility of NHTSA and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)." The site provides information about fuel economy programs and domestic, imported (European and Asian), and historical passenger cars and other passenger vehicles. This article describes how changing your driving habits may result in substantial fuel economy improvements. Driving tips were tested "over a remote 55-mile route in the high desert of California." Tests with significant fuel savings included moderate instead of aggressive driving, lowering high speeds, using cruise control, and limiting excessive idling. In 2007, the campaign helped pass "the first increase in fuel efficiency standards for cars and light trucks in more than 30 years." Reasons to act include security, savings, safety, and less carbon dioxide. The "Background" section provides a history of fuel economy back to the 1970s.
