"The Triple Nickles": The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, 1944-1947 view detail comment email this

History, photographs, names, functions, and other information on this battalion of Black paratroopers. Trained for combat in World War II, these soldiers served in the Pacific Northwest as smokejumpers in Operation Fire Fly, responsible for locating and disposing of Japanese balloon bombs, and also for fire fighting. A history of the Haymarket Affair and the emerging power of labor, putting it in context beginning with the Great Chicago Fire and the national railroad strike of 1877. Presented as a tragedy in five acts with prologue and epilogue, this history includes visual materials, artifacts, video segments (requires QuickTime), and various documents. Archives contains "copies of most of the original manuscripts, artifacts, broadsides, photographs, prints, transcript of witness testimony and the accompanying evidence from the trial," and more.There are also suggested readings. Fire and Mud: Eruptions and Lahars of Mount Pinatubo, Philippines view detail comment email this

This site describes the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo and the extensive mudflows which followed in 1991-1992. There are articles, many of which are academic or technical, on the geologic and human aspects of the eruption. There are also many photographs and extensive seismic information, with a description of the operation of a telemetered seismic network. This site is essentially an online version of the book, published in 1996.

The photographs were taken by local photographers, among them Asahel Curtis, Webster and Stevens ... and the Peterson Brothers Studio. On March 25, 1911, a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York City killed 146 factory workers.
