Companion to a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) Independent Lens film about four college students who, in 1960, "began a sit-in at a Woolworth's lunch counter in a small city in North Carolina. The act of simply sitting down to order food in a restaurant that refused service to anyone but whites is now widely regarded as one of the pivotal moments in the American Civil Rights Movement." Small collection of photos from an October 16, 1995, event in which "African-American men from across the country gathered on Washington's National Mall ... for a massive Million Man March advocating 'unity, atonement and brotherhood.'... Organized by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, the march also drew participants from other churches, as well as many schools and social organizations." Part of a Smithsonian Institution program to document events on the National Mall.

This site was established to commemorate the 75th anniversary (in 2005) of the 1930 Salt March in which Mohandas K. Gandhi and marchers walked 241 miles in 24 days to a place to make salt to protest against the British salt tax in Colonial India. Features photos, video clips, and facts about the march. Also includes material about the 2005 march reenactment. From the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation, founded by a great-grandson of Gandhi.
