Gifford Pinchot National Forest (Wash.) Gifford Pinchot National Forest Located in southwest Washington State, "the Gifford Pinchot National Forest is one of the oldest National Forests in the United States" and includes the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Of particular interest is a diagram and explanation of the workings of the crane, which includes a gondola to transport researchers to the tree canopy.
