Smiley Lore :-)
September, 19, 2002 marked the twentieth anniversary of the use of keyboard symbols to make a smiley face. :-) This brief essay by Scott E. Fahlman, who proposed the process, explains how it came about. Fahlman also proposed the frown for un-funny things. :-( There is a link to a transcript of the original board thread where the suggestions were made.
