The South Pacific Portraiture of Caroline Mytinger
Several dozen paintings and sketches of indigenous peoples of the South Pacific by portrait artist Caroline Mytinger. In 1926, Mytinger undertook "a four-year journey to paint portraits of the tribes people in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. ... Her goal was to record their traditions before they were forever changed by western cultural influence." Includes commentaries written by the artist. From the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, University of California, Berkeley.
