The Devil's Dictionary
This edition of the cynically humorous reference work by Ambrose Bierce is preceded with the useful caveat, "there will no doubt be material here that you will find sexist, nationalist, racist, or just generally offensive." Nevertheless, much to browse in this classic, first published in 1906, such as this definition of the term pantomime : "a play in which the story is told without violence to the language."
