Only Woman Medal of Honor Holder Ahead of Her Time
An article about Dr. Mary Walker as the only woman to have received the Medal of Honor for her service in the Union Army during the Civil War. Describes how Walker's medal was awarded in 1865, and that "her citation cites her wartime service, but not specifically valor in combat." Also describes how her medal was rescinded in 1916 and restored in 1977. From the U.S. Department of Defense.
